Overview

Veliko Trgovišce is a community in the Krapina-Zagorje Community, abot 20 km north of Zagreb and 20 km south of Krapina. Population about 5,700, some 1,300 in the village of the same name itself. Veliko Trgovišce is probably well known as the birth place of Franjo Tudjman, the first president of the Republic of Croatia.
The coat of arms is: per pale dexter chequy gules and argent and sinister vert overall conjoined a pale and a chief argent.   The vertical white pale and the chief together form the shape of the letter T for Trgovišce, but also for Tudjman.   The flag was adopted at the same time as the coat of arms in mid-1990's, a bicolour white over blue with the coat of arms in the middle, and was briefly used. It was probably rejected by the Ministry of Administration and the use was suspended.   Information thanks to Tomislav Šipek, 01.07.2003.
