Berkelland municipality

Berkelland is a new municipality in Gelderland province, formed 1 Jan 2005 by the merger of the former municipalities of Ruurlo, Borculo, Eibergen and Neede. It is bordering on Germany.
Population: 46.655; area: 284,71 km² - settlements: Borculo (seat), Achterveld, Avest, Beltrum, Brinkmanshoek, Broeke, De Bruil, De Haar, Eibergen, Geesteren, Gelselaar, Haarlo, Heurne (part), Holterhoek, Hoonte, Hupsel, Lintvelde, Lochuizen, Loo, Mallem, Mariënvelde, Neede, Noordijk, Noordijkerveld, Olden Eibergen, Rekken, Rietmolen, Ruurlo, Veldhoek (part), Zwolle.

Berkelland is named after the small river Berkel, which has been "restored" by common efforts in the Netherlands and Germany. This inspired the studio Stijlgenoten in Den Ham to design a logo representing the wheel of a watermill. Part of this logo was used on the municipal flag, adopted 1 Jan 2005.

It looks a bit unusual, but possesses the qualities of a good flag: simple, used symbolism (stylized waterwheel), two colors, no text or coat of arms, and unique.
