Description of the flag

According to an atricle in Dolenjski list nr. 8/1999 (25 Febraury1999), the coat of arms and flag of Kostel were adopted "on a recent municipal assembly session". The symbols are based on the historical coat of arms of Kostel and were designed by Dr. Boco Otorepec, one of the most prominent heraldists in Slovenia.

The flag, as shown on Ljudmila website, is vertical ,white flag with a wide red vertical stripe through the middle and overall the coat of arms.

Coat of arms

[Coat of arms of Kostel]by Zeljko Heimer

The Genealogia website shows the first coloured version of the coat of arms of Kostel. Earlier representations since the XIVth century were on historical seals and not coloured. The coloured version was first shown in Valvasor's Armorial (XVIIth century), now in National Library in Zagreb, showing a white tower on a green mount in a red field. The coat of arms is canting since the name of the town is derived from Latin castellum. The German name of Kostel was Grafenwarth.
